Building Real Organizational Security.
David Woodward, 10-2001

Security issues are a new dynamic to be actively managed impacting what and how we do things everywhere. So what can effective leaders do to keep their organizations secure and moving forward? They can lead the whole organization, not just parts of it.  Below is a list of steps that leaders at all levels can take during difficult times to make sure that progress and performance keeps moving forward.

Step one: Reach out. Now is the time to re-introduce yourself into the company culture. This time to reinforce the relationships and organizational "security."

Step two: Be present with people. Listen and hear not only what they say, but also what they feel, think and believe.  Listen to the whole person. Let them know that they have been heard. Few things are as comforting as knowing that you have been heard.

Step three: Slow down.  Slow down the normal pace of human interaction to really engage and connect with people at every level of the organization. This may take more time than you think you have, but the investment in human connection offers immeasurable returns in the long run.

Step four: Seek input. Now is the time to accept and encourage input. Open the doorway to explore new ideas, thoughts and feelings about what can be done to resolve outstanding issues or those that were allowed to go unresolved before. Fixing these systems and processes now will support the organizations ability to respond quickly to new opportunities and helps people to share the problem and the solution.

Step five: Get balanced. Get clear about what is really important to you and the organization.  Set up support systems to make sure everyone is clear about what is really important.  This way, when things start picking up, the personal relationships will support the process rather than endure it.

Step Six: Get busy. Now is the time for action to shore up loose systems, processes and human relationships, the relationships that will be needed to drive the organization forward.

As the terrible events of our recent past remind us, it is ultimately the network of people that ensures peace and security. Leading the process of building the human connections among and within an organization is a powerful tool that ever leader must use going forward.
